Sometimes we work so hard at getting it all right. We read everything we can find. We learn all the rules. We labor over each appeal, sure it will be “the one”.
And sometimes a complete novice gets an awful lot right. By being sincere. By staying focused on a single message. By working toward a clear goal.
This is an email appeal I received recently from a young cousin. She’s newly graduated and has been working as a teacher for a year now. As you can see, her dedication to her students is moving. And since she and her colleagues have already raised more than $1,100 by asking friends and family to help, people are moving – toward making gifts.
I thought it was something to share. I think her example will help keep me focused on my real goals. I hope it inspires you, too.
Hi all ๐
First off, I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer and getting in some relaxation and family time! I know I am!
Many of you have already very generously donated to one or both of my Donors Choose projects, which helped me get much-needed supplies for my classroom. I can’t thank you enough! Having enough supplies and up-to-date technology and tools in the classroom is extremely important, and sadly, almost never the case in low-income public schools. We teachers rely on money out of our own pockets as well as donations and grants to make things happen in our school! Our students are also not always afforded educational opportunities that more affluent schools can provide for their students.
This past year, we had a wonderful volunteer named Emily Fuentes who came to our school and led a garden-based education program. She helped build an amazing community garden and spent a lot of money out of pocket to get the kids out there and gardening! They learned how to maintain a garden using teamwork, about how plants grow from seeds, and about how their food gets to their plates. It was amazing to get out there with the kids and watch them dig, shovel, pick, and try new vegetables! We even ran a produce stand at the front of our school that sold over 400,000 lbs of produce to the community!
Unfortunately, a program like this cannot continue without some sort of funding. Please help support the Sobrante Park Garden Project!! If you have a moment, watch the video, meet Emily and the kids, and see what the program is all about! These kiddos deserve a great garden-based education program ๐

Thank you all so much for taking the time to read my e-mail and support my school!
Love,
Amy
Then she introduces a new program. She tells us what it will do for the kids. She links to a video that makes the project very real.
And she tells us that this great project can only happen if we help.
Simple, sincere, and effective.

Great to spot one to showcase! They say reading good writing helps you write better yourself… this is a nice example.

I thought she did a great job. Hope it raises lots for her kids! (Thanks, Beth).
